Dermal Fillers
What are dermal fillers made of?

The dermal fillers we use in our clinic is made from a substance known as hyaluronic acid. This is a synthetically produced but naturally occurring glycoprotein found in the skin in all animals. These type of fillers are proven to be safe and effective.
-
Hyaluronic acid acts as a structural molecule in our skin and also as a humectant, meaning it binds water molecules to keep our skin hydrated.
-
Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers contain molecules that are bound together by cross-links into cohesive gels, meaning they hold their shape when injected into areas where we aim to replace lost volume.
-
When these are injected strategically under the skin in areas of predictable volume loss, they naturally restore the contours of the face in a subtle and gentle way.
The body naturally breaks down hyaluronic acid so over time the fillers are reabsorbed safely into the body with no lasting effects.

Additional Information
What areas can be treated?

Many areas can be treated in the face. The areas we treat in our clinic include:
-
Cheeks
-
Lips
-
Marionette lines
-
Naso-labial folds
-
Chin
How long does it last?
Fillers are not permanent.
How long they last depends on things like the type of filler and where it's injected. They usually last between 6 and 18 months.

The area treated also determines how long the filler lasts, for example cheek fillers can last up to 2 years.

Fillers break down at different rates depending on the client, for example client's with higher metabolism (such as those who partake in regular exercise) will breakdown the filler quicker.
What is the downtime?
There can be redness and small bumps from the injection points but this usually subsides within a couple of hours.
With any injectables there is a chance that bruising and/or swelling may occur.
Bruising and swelling will usually appear within 48 hours from treatment.
To reduce the risk of bruising we suggest that you avoid omega-3 fatty acid supplements, blood thinners and alcohol for 48 hours prior to your injectable treatments.
Can it be reversed?
Hyaluronic acid fillers can be removed using injections of an enzyme known as hyaluronidase if there are any problems encountered following a filler treatment.
Does it hurt?
The filler has an anaesthetic in it called lidocaine which will numb the area and may cause a tingling sensation.

For areas like the lips we apply a numbing cream prior to injecting with filler.

Therefore, although it may be a bit uncomfortable, it is rarely painful.
Are there side effects?
The most common side effect is swelling and bruising, this usually settles within a few weeks.

A rare side effect to be aware of is vascular occlusion, this is when the filler is injected into an artery blocking the flow of blood to the area being treated. If untreated this can lead to death of the tissue in that area (necrosis).
In the unlikely event that this were occur, the filler would be dissolved using hyaluronidase.
