Acne

Acne is a complex skin condition influenced by various factors including hormonal changes, genetics, diet, and lifestyle. It typically develops when hair follicles become clogged with excess oil (sebum), dead skin cells, and bacteria.

The Science Behind Acne

Acne begins with a process known as hyperkeratinization, where the skin cells lining the hair follicles become sticky and clump together, leading to the formation of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads).

Concurrently, increased sebum production by the sebaceous glands further exacerbates this process, providing an ideal environment for the growth of Cutibacterium acnes, a bacterium involved in the development of acne lesions.

The interaction between Cutibacterium acnes and the immune system triggers inflammation, resulting in red, swollen acne lesions.
